Sounds from the past

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e_Rbts5Q9Q

These sounds invoke memories of lazy Sunday afternoons.

In a small town in Portugal, Sunday afternoons were an open invitation for the youth to gather listening to beautiful tangos being played over the somewhat scratchy sound system and dance.

I remember vividly the old fire house's open salon and dozens and dozens of young people whose faces and names I no longer recall.

The sound of this tango is forever etched in my brain along with the sense of pure joy that it invoked on the mind of a young girl.

Those simple and delicious days will stay with me forever.

Wanted to share some of "MY" music with you. I feel these women as though they were my own skin.

I love fado. To me, it represents Portugal, the same way that Jazz and the Blues represent the States. What do they have in common? The soul. The soul....

Cores eternamente gravadas na alma. Amor perpetuo pela testemunha dos que por aqui passaram antes de mim.

Alijo!

Sweet memories of Clotilde. Of throwing the candy the nuns gave us behind the berry bushes. We were sure the candy was poisoned. We decided that we were so bad that this was their plot to rid themselves of us. Candy was a rarity; so this belief of ours was absolutely real in our seven year old minds. We would throw the candy over the bushes and run down the hill so fast, till our little hearts couldn't beat any faster and our mouths gasped for air....

Clotilde......the beating we got when we decided her two year old brother was too old for curly locks to his shoulders and gave him a haircut....

Clotilde....the tangos we danced on Sundays afternoon at the firehouse. All the young lovers we disturbed by purposefully bumping into them and being so sure that they would never catch us because we were faster than lightening.

I wish I had seen you again! I did meet your daughter. She is lovely Clotilde. Lovely!

But so quiet and reserved. So much pain in her eyes. I wish I could have heard from her that wicked sound of your laughter.
